it's almost here…
   (waiting for winter)

It’s almost here: white flakes against a white sky, mornings when your breath is a cloud of steam, the squeak of boots across packed snow, the gentle sting of cold air on your face, a wind due only and exclusively to your own motion…

It’s almost here: the annual search for those gloves, goggles, favorite ski hats, the annual visit to the ski shop to arrange for your favorite tuner to put those bases back in shape (you meant to do it last spring, but you forgot), almost time to put your ski rack back on top of the car…

It’s almost here; the welcome burn in muscles after a long non-stop run, the rediscovered pleasure of leaving lines on snow, the whisper of powder beneath your skis, the false but delicious feeling of sudden acceleration coming out of a tight turn…

It’s almost here: the weightless free-floating sensation of a long turn, the breathless expectation of the day’s first run, the deep satisfaction of the day’s last run as the snow turns pink in the last light of a short December day…

It’s almost here: the invitation of a trackless expanse of powder whispering Ski Me Now, the dare of a steep white wall of wind-blasted snow whispering Ski Me If You Can, the promise of a new mountain, a new valley, a new run, a new winter…

It’s almost here: another season, another turn, another perfect run, another fast frozen flight back down to earth, another declaration of independence from weight, from time, from care, scribbled with skis, signed on snow…

It’s almost here.
