             two poems on the mystery of it all

 

1.

Day after day

I teach them how to ski.

How does one ski?

They call me teacher.

How can one teach?

My students all learn to ski.

How do they do it?

‘It’ teaches me,

‘It’ learns them,

‘It’ skis, ‘it’ snows.

We should praise ‘it’!

2.

My students never believe me

when I tell them

that understanding skiing

won’t help them ski better.

Doing is enough: to ski

just ski, to see

just look.

     The teacher

doesn’t understand either.

His skis skí him

his students teach him.

Obscurely he even suspects

that practice doesn’t make perfect

but that praxis

is perfection.…
