Hard to define but, yes, we know it when we see it. And to be sure, to a skier, anything that conjures up the days we spend in the surreal white world of snow-covered peaks seems beautiful, is beautiful.

 

For years I have been a great fan, and a collector, of poster images of skiing and ski resorts from the first half of the twentieth century, when both tyhe public and an emerging generation of graphic artists were discovering the charm and attraction of winter vacations in the Alps.

 

I am looking forward to sharing images from these early days of skiing-for-fun, when skiing threw off its utilitarian roots as mere mountain transportation in winter, and became the favorite leisure pastime of so many people, in so many countries.
